Reading

Stolen by Lucy Christopher.  I picked up this book last week on my search of new books to read after finishing the Hunger Games last week.  The story follows a 16 year old girl, Gemma who is taken from an airport and forced to live peaceably with her captor in Australia, she is confused and hurt but oddly attracted to him. It is written in the form of a letter to him, her kidnapper and its odd to see what she really thinks of him through her time.   I’m excited to see how this book unfolds as it has gotten great reviews and seems like a nice change from some other super girlie books I have been reading…we will see.

Listening to

Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass – I cannot get this song out of my head, its just super fun and girlie while being a little hard, the best qualities in Nicki’s music

Wearing

Essie Ballet Slippers on Hands and Essie Tart Deco on Toes.  Essie is such a great quality line of polishes.  I love the look of either color on my nails or toes paired with glitter.  Glitter makes these everyday colors fun and sassy.

Watching
Mad Men Season 4 – Catching the final season that way when the new season starts I will be good to go.  This season is crazy good so far and the always beautiful Christina Hendricks makes me wish I would have lived in the 60s, my body type and fashion sense would have worked so well then.

 Wishing for
Marc Jacobs Kate Bracelet in Rose Gold.  I heart rose gold.  It looks great on my skin tone, never looks fakish gold and automatically riches up any outfit.  At only $98 this bracelet would be a great addition to any accessory collection.  Image how adorable it would be with jeans and a white tee or a little black dress…so versatile.

What are you reading, listening to, wearing, watching, and wishing for?

Water for Elephants: Movie & Book Review

Apr 26

There is nothing I love more than a book/movie combo.  Something about the characters coming to life in the written word then seeing it all being acted out in front of you just sucks me in! As always with a movie made from a book you always have the possibility of being utterly dissapointed by the lack of detail that the movie gives after ready the written counterpart.  Another downfall of a book made into a movie is the characters not lining up, in your head you create your own character based on the descriptions that the author gives, your own instincts, people you know that remind of the character etc, seeing the casting directors interpretation may be a disappointment if it doesn’t line up with yours.

About 6 months ago I saw a beautiful trailer for a movie called “Water for Elephants” it absolutely sucked me in with its beautiful imagery, storyline, music and not to mention the beautiful actors.  I picked up the book immediately to begin reading it in preparation for the movie coming out, I have to read books before movies, if not I never finish the book.

I absolutely devoured this book about a man Jacob Jankowski, 90 or 93 who is living in a nursing home.  Jacob is remembering his life at a young age.  The story begins with him at 23 finishing up his last exams at Cornell to become a veterinarian.  His education is interupted when his parents are killed in a car accident leaving him with nothing, no home, no money and no hope.  He jumps a train in search of a place for work but finds out that the train that he landing on is the traveling circus of “Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth” He quickly learns that traveling with the circus is not the easiest job with a clear caste system in place Jacob is not treated with the respect that he is used to. He spends his first few days shoveling manure until someone realizes that he is tune with the animals and may be able to help with the shows star horse.

Jacob is then appointed the shows vet befriending the shows star couple, August and Marlena Rosenblum.  Jacob is instantly infatuated by Marlena and his infatuation grows as they spend more and more time together.  You follow Jacob through standard coming of age issues with virginity, lust and friendship.  During his friendship with the Rosenblums he becomes very aware of August and his treatment of Marlena.  As time goes on the circus acquires an elephant, Rosie, and Jacob and Marlena become very attached to her while August is cruel and hateful to her.

After a heated argument between August and Marlena Jacob and August fight over Marlena’s honor.  Marlena then flees to a hotel to get away from August where Jacob comes to comfort her, they sleep together declare their love….blah blah blah :) Marlena goes back to the circus avoiding August in an attempt to leave him with Jacob in the coming days.  In the climax of the story several workers who have been redlighted from the train come back to release the animals in an attempt to get back at the owners.  Jacob is startled when the animals are released and there is a stampede on the circus grounds.  He spots Marlena in an altercation with August and witnesses Rosie, the elephant kill August with her foot stake. Jacob and Marlena live happily ever after.

The movie starring Robert Pattinson and Resse Witherspoon was a great adaptation of the book. Ovsioulsy some things were left out as they always are due to time constraints but overall it was a great visual representation of the story.  The look of the film, costumes, hair and make up were stunning and Reese Witherspoon & Robert Pattinson’s chemistry actually worked.  They made thier love seem forbidden and that was the whole point.

Did you see the movie or read the book? What did you think? Leave it in the comments below or tweet your thoughts to me @mlj2374

Zac Posen will design Bella’s Wedding Dress

Nov 08

It has been rumored that designer Zac Posen will design the wedding dress for Bella Swan in the movie version of the bestselling novel “Breaking Dawn” by Stephanie Meyer.  Meyer describes the dress as an early 1900s design with the feeling of a Jane Austen novel.

A few months ago INStyle released a few sketches from major designers with their interpretations on what Bella’s dress should look like and Zac Posen actually did a sketch for this story.  You can see all of hte sketches here.

Do you think Zac’s design is on point with Meyer’s description? Do you think that the sketch he originally did will actually be the dress that Kristen Stewart will wear in “Breaking Dawn?” Who do you think would be a good designer for the dress? Personally I like Posen’s design aesthetic and I think that his sketch is pretty much “on the money” with the description while still being modern and fashion forward.

Charlie St. Cloud – the movie

Aug 02

In case you missed it I blogged about “Charlie St. Cloud” by Ben Sherwood a few weeks ago.  it was a great book, fast read, emotional, heart warming  and a coming of age novel which is always great.

The movie based on this novel came out this past weekend and Forrest was so sweet to agree to see this during his birthday celebration.  All in all it was a good little movie.  Just as any other movie based on a book the movie wasn’t as good as the book but don’t let that keep you away.

Zac Efron plays Charlie St. Cloud who is a young man who looses his brother. The story follows him in the years after his brother’s death.  He is able to see his brother and has kept his promise to his brother to play catch with him each day at sunset.  By keeping his promise Charlie is not able to be the person he wants to be.

Ultimately its a love story with a supernatural twist.  Zac Efron really does a great job and sort of finds his place as a real actor, you also can’t really deny that he is stunningly beautiful as well (even though I feel somewhat of a pedophile saying that)

Great little move…check it out

“Linger” by Maggie Stiefvater

Jul 27

I just finished “Linger” by Maggie Steifvater. It is ahte 2nd book in the “Shiver” series.  This series follows Grace an ordinary 17 year old girl who fins herself in love with a wolf.  This wolf Sam is actually a werewolf who turns into a human in teh summer.  They meet and fall in love and find a “cure” for Sam in the end of “Shiver”

“Linger” follows Sam and Grace’s romance as well as a few new characters that carry over from”Shiver” Weird things start to happen when Grace, who was bitten by wolves when she was little and should be a werewolf as well but is not, starts to feel strange.  This book also adds in the narrative of Isabel and Cole giving the reader 2 more viewpoints into the series.

If you like “Shiver” you will like this book.  It wasn’t quite as fun loving as “Shiver” but I feel like this book gave some different views into the story which makes it nice as a reader to see the story through others eyes.

Check it out.
