What to Expect 3 Book Set Giveaway

Aug 22

Most pregnant moms have heard of “What to Expect When you are Expecting” for me it was a savior during my first pregnancy.  At 20 I was a young mom so a lot of the little quirks of pregnancy I knew nothing about. I read the book cover to cover and re read the labor portions to make sure that I was prepared for my big day.

When the day came for me to head to the hospital I knew everything I could possibly know about pregnancy, labor, delivery and the postpartum phase and I was so happy about that.  I am the type of person that feels comfort in the knowledge of a situation and I am afraid of the unknown.  This book took away that fear and gave me the knowledge I needed to be confident and enjoy the experience of becoming a mother.

What to Expect has such a great line of books that are suitable for parents of all ages to kids of all ages.  Every parent needs help during their journey and I wanted to help all you moms out there with the obstacles that come with parenting. How to Talk to LIttle Girls…

Aug 10

I came across a blog that referenced an article by Lisa Bloom called “How to Talk to Little Girls” I was so inspired and horrified by this article.  It told the story of Lisa, a writer approaching a little girl and automatically wanting to compliment her outfit.

I am the worlds worst for complimenting girls on how they look or what they are wearing.  Bloom challenges women to ask little girls questions about their minds.  “What books are you reading?” “Do you like animals?” ” What do you want to be when you grow up” This forces us to not put a huge emphasis on a little girls appearance which automatically teaches them that they have more value than just being pretty.

As a mother of a beautiful and smart and funny 18 month old little girl I am going to challenge myself to complimenting her in multiple ways without referencing her appearance.  I am a free thinker and I want my kids to be the same, kids that love with blinders on and have the most open minds and have no boundaries when it comes to life and by only complimenting girls by their appearance I am stifling these goals for my kids right from the beginning of their development.

I challenge all people out there, not just parents to speak to children differently, not just girls, boys can fall right into this situation as well (complimenting their athleticism, strength etc) Talk to them differently, ask them different questions and challenge their minds in different ways.

They will thank you in the long run by becoming better human beings who value themselves as people rather than an appearance.

Teaching My Kids to Bite Back

May 03

I have very easy going children that for some reason get bullied one way or another.  Bailor my 5 year old is the sweetest most timid little boy, he wouldn’t hurt a fly but for some reason he is always in the one who gets rocks thrown at him or gets hurt at school.  My daughter Luna Jane, 15 months is a bit more fiesty.  She will rip a toy out of her brother’s hands in a heartbeat but she is so teeny that other kids can over power her sometimes.

Yesterday I received a call from the daycare asking if it was ok to have her spend a day in the “big girl” class aka the 1 to 2 year olds.  Knowing that this day was coming I agreed to let her spend the day there and have her try it out.  I just knew she was going to have a great day.  She loves older kids and is always so excited to see her big brother.

I read her daily note while picking her up and it exclaimed “She had a GREAT day!” My mom pride bubbled over thinking about how she was moving up and getting along with the older kids.  This pride bubbled over into anger when I noticed a huge purply bite mark on her sweet little forearm.  We are talking an impression of a bite mark we are talking a bruised set of half moons with little bruises for all 7 teeth.  I was furious.  I called the daycare immediately.  I know that kids bite so I let the lady at the daycare know that I was alarmed that this happend while she was in the older classroom and maybe she wasn’t ready.  She agreed and said they would keep an eye on her.  I felt so much better for sticking up my baby.

After bathing Luna I was lotioning up her chubby little rolls and to my disbelief came across 2 other bite marks from the same set of 7 little teeth, one on her inner thigh, one on her calf.  The anger was quickly coming back to me, too bad the daycare was already closed allowing me to stew overnight with this anger.  After speaking with the daycare, going over their biting policy etc I left that office feeling no better than I did when I walked in.  There is no policies or procedures that makes me feel better about my sweet little 20 lb girl having to defend herself against another kid biting her.  So what’s a mom to do?

Have your kids ever gotten bitten at daycare/school? Were they the biter? What did you do? Leave your answers in the comments or tweet them to me @mlj2374

Kids Fashion Find – Crazy 8

Apr 20

A new kids clothing store opened up in our mall last week…Crazy 8, its a sibling company to Gymboree.  The quality of the clothing seems to be on the same level of Gymboree without being as stuffy and conservative or expensive as Gymboree.

I popped in last week and picked up a swimsuit for Luna ( the leopard one below) and it was only $15, pretty good price for a super cute unique swimsuit.  I was shocked at their selection as well as the range in their sizing.  After checking out their site today I am super excited to become a frequent shopper of this store….the outfits below are so sweet that they are literally giving me cavaties.

I know that my sweet little kiddos would look amazing in all of these outfits and swimsuits.  Can’t wait to go on my next shopping spree.

J Crew Ad being attacked for boy with pink toenails

Apr 14

A J Crew kids ad was released this week with J Crew’s president and creative director Jenna Lyons painting her 5-year-old son Beckett’s toenails pink.  This simple sweet ad of a mother and son sharing some quality time together has been ridiculed and accused of promoting transgender ideals in children..seriously?

Would people be reacting this strongly if the ad featured a little girl wearing a football helmet? As parents we need to remember that we are molding the people that are children are going to be and do we really want to teach them to limit themselves due to what society says is “right” for their gender? My answer to this is NO.

I have a 5 year old son and if he wanted to paint his toes there would be no question about it…we would paint his toes.  If my daughter wants to play sports, she would play sports.  I don’t ever want to tell my children what they can and cannot due just because they were born a boy or girl.

Parents need to remember that kids don’t know to discrimiate or hate, we teach them that.  So to all of these parents who are tearing this mother and her son apart for painting his toes pink, your kids will be the ones to bully others into suicide later on….Congratulations!
