Gatsby Fashion

I have been dying to see the newest film adaptation of the classic novel “The Great Gatsby” for sometime.  Add in Leonardo Dicaprio in an amazingly tailored suit, art deco and 1920s glamour and you’ve got me really excited. I re read the book a few weeks ago because it had been quite some time (like 9th grade) since I originally read the book.

The film did not disappoint, it was a great representation of the major themes of the novel, Dicaprio was great as always, the soundtrack is fabulous and a nice modern contrast to the beautiful 1920s imagery created by Baz Lurhmann.  Since I liked it so much I figured I would put together a few key 1920s peices to think about adding to your day to day look while people have Gatsby fever.

Soft Waves & a Red Lip – These old Hollywood waves are so easy to pull off and instantly glam up any look.  I use a clipless curling iron for this look and its all about separating the curls and brushing them out (sounds crazy I know).  This tutorial is pretty good if you need help.  Red lips are one of this day to night transformations that is amazingly quick, easy and cheap.  Anyone can wear red lips (even a red head :) ) but it has to be the RIGHT red for your skin tone. Check out this guide for finding  your perfect red hue.

Art Deco Details – These beautiful structural details in jewelry, clothing etc are extremely interesting and make very simple pieces special.

Hair Accessories – great way to jazz up your soft waves, a glitzy headband or hair accessory tucked away into a soft chignon will have you ready to do the Charleston in no time.

Do you have Gatsby fever? What’s your favorite way to bring 20s style into your day to day look?

Celebrity News: Kardashian Baby, Rhianna Drama and Hunger Games Craziness

Feb 25

Kourtney Kardashian is having a girl! – I was super excited to hear about Kourt finding out that she and Scott Disick are having a girl this week…how fab is that little diva gonna be? You can check out E’s full story about it here but I wanted to ask..what “K” name would you choose for Kourney’s baby girl (if she went with the K thing like her mom)????

Our picks are Kenly, Keely or Koral, its harder than we thought finding a K name.

Rhianna and Chris Brown dangerously close to getting back together! - WTF? Right off of Rhianna’s amazing showing at the Grammy’s she goes and gets close to getting back together with the king of the DBags.  Not that she owes an explanation to anyone but she was such a great representation of female empowerment for so long b/c of the incident between her and Chris Brown but now its just kind of a bummer that they are back in action leaving Drake behind :( They are rumored to be performing together on American Idol…hopefully he doesn’t beat the shit out of her again!

The Hunger Game outsells Twilight in Advance Ticket Sales – Wowza! I bet no one thought this would happen.  I am a fan of both book series and while they are very different I had no idea that the Hunger Games movies would get the same caliber of followers of Twilight.  The first movie adaptation of the first Suzanne Collins novel in the trilogy comes out March 23rd.

These are my fave/most shocking news stories of the week.

Water for Elephants: Movie & Book Review

Apr 26

There is nothing I love more than a book/movie combo.  Something about the characters coming to life in the written word then seeing it all being acted out in front of you just sucks me in! As always with a movie made from a book you always have the possibility of being utterly dissapointed by the lack of detail that the movie gives after ready the written counterpart.  Another downfall of a book made into a movie is the characters not lining up, in your head you create your own character based on the descriptions that the author gives, your own instincts, people you know that remind of the character etc, seeing the casting directors interpretation may be a disappointment if it doesn’t line up with yours.

About 6 months ago I saw a beautiful trailer for a movie called “Water for Elephants” it absolutely sucked me in with its beautiful imagery, storyline, music and not to mention the beautiful actors.  I picked up the book immediately to begin reading it in preparation for the movie coming out, I have to read books before movies, if not I never finish the book.

I absolutely devoured this book about a man Jacob Jankowski, 90 or 93 who is living in a nursing home.  Jacob is remembering his life at a young age.  The story begins with him at 23 finishing up his last exams at Cornell to become a veterinarian.  His education is interupted when his parents are killed in a car accident leaving him with nothing, no home, no money and no hope.  He jumps a train in search of a place for work but finds out that the train that he landing on is the traveling circus of “Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth” He quickly learns that traveling with the circus is not the easiest job with a clear caste system in place Jacob is not treated with the respect that he is used to. He spends his first few days shoveling manure until someone realizes that he is tune with the animals and may be able to help with the shows star horse.

Jacob is then appointed the shows vet befriending the shows star couple, August and Marlena Rosenblum.  Jacob is instantly infatuated by Marlena and his infatuation grows as they spend more and more time together.  You follow Jacob through standard coming of age issues with virginity, lust and friendship.  During his friendship with the Rosenblums he becomes very aware of August and his treatment of Marlena.  As time goes on the circus acquires an elephant, Rosie, and Jacob and Marlena become very attached to her while August is cruel and hateful to her.

After a heated argument between August and Marlena Jacob and August fight over Marlena’s honor.  Marlena then flees to a hotel to get away from August where Jacob comes to comfort her, they sleep together declare their love….blah blah blah :) Marlena goes back to the circus avoiding August in an attempt to leave him with Jacob in the coming days.  In the climax of the story several workers who have been redlighted from the train come back to release the animals in an attempt to get back at the owners.  Jacob is startled when the animals are released and there is a stampede on the circus grounds.  He spots Marlena in an altercation with August and witnesses Rosie, the elephant kill August with her foot stake. Jacob and Marlena live happily ever after.

The movie starring Robert Pattinson and Resse Witherspoon was a great adaptation of the book. Ovsioulsy some things were left out as they always are due to time constraints but overall it was a great visual representation of the story.  The look of the film, costumes, hair and make up were stunning and Reese Witherspoon & Robert Pattinson’s chemistry actually worked.  They made thier love seem forbidden and that was the whole point.

Did you see the movie or read the book? What did you think? Leave it in the comments below or tweet your thoughts to me @mlj2374

My Favorite Things

Feb 28

Here are a few things food, fashion and more that I am in love with right now.

1.  Javier Bardem – This man is so unbelievably sexy that it hurts.  He is exotic, rugged and incredibly handsome.  I don’t normally use the word handsome but I think that his looks call for the word. He is married to Penelope Cruz and I don’t know if you could create a better looking couple out of clay.

2. Rhianna’s “Loud” – With 3 singles already off of this album I think its a keeper.  The songs on the album have such a cool and different vibe that it makes it one of those albums that you can put on repeat and not get sick of it.  Also the girl is so hot its hard not to want to buy her album just for the sake of looking at the cover art.

3.  Elliot Lucca Backpack – This convertible metallic backpack was worn on Pretty Little Liars by Aria Montgomery played by Lucy Hale. I think this bag has such a cool tough vibe while still being ultra girly.  It can be worn cross body or as a backpack which makes it super versatile.

4.  The moonicure – Basically an inverted manicure where the portion of your nail closest to the cuticle is painted a differnt color.  My favorite take on this is a super sublte combo of two neutrals tones that are almost identical or something totally drastic like tan and black.

5.  Subway – This has to be the best fast food lunch option, its healthy (well depending on what you get) and it makes you feel good about yourself after eating it and lets be honest, not many fast food options can make us feel good.  I always order a 6″ turkey and ham on wheat with pepper jack cheese, spicy mustard, lettuce, spinach, cucumber, bellpepper, banana peppers and salt and pepper…YUM!

What are some of your favorites?

My New Obsessions

Feb 06

Navy Eyeshadow – I normally use Tarte’s Golden Navy but I absolutely love teh look fo navy eyeshadow on my eyes.  It is such a great, chic, unexpected alternative to a black smokey eye.  Try it out you will be pleasantly surprised.  Navy is also amazingly flattering to almost any skin tone so if you are afraid to wear black navy is the way to go.

Oranges – Not only are they in season and super cheap right now, they are delicious and nutritous.  I easily eat 3 a day..no wonder I am not sick…so much vitamin C.  I usually eat mine as a snack in the afternoon and after dinner when I bad snacky habits normally come into play.  Another great perk…0 Weight Watchers Points Plus Values! Can I get an amen?

Mila Kunis – There is something about this girl…she is stunningly beautiful, sexy, carefree and I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t want to be her right now.  She is on the cover of this month’s cosmo and she looks amazing.  She is also starring in the Oscar nominated film :”Black Swan” she is on fire and we are taking notice.

Ballet Inspired Fashion – What little girl has not taken ballet lessons at one point in her life? This spring take back that fantasy of being a ballerina with fashion inspired by the most beautiful form of dance.  From comfy flats, wrap tops, muted neutrals, leggings and more this feminine trend is one to follow.

Carefree Waves – There is nothing sexier than carefree beachy waves. Get this look by wrapping your hair away form your face around a large barrel curling iron.  spray lightly and run your fingers through the curls for a look that is sure to turn heads.

What do you think of these obsessions? What are you obsessed with right now? Let us know in the comments.
