How to Rock Neon

Apr 16

Ok so I’m sure that you have been seeing neon or bright colors in all of your favorite stores.  From dresses, to top to wedges, belts and beyond, neon is everywhere but how do you rock this look without looking like AC Slater getting ready for a date at the Max? Don’t be afraid of this “Look at me” trend, the easiest way to pull this look off without trying….dark denim.

Try pairing a neon top with dark denim and neutral accessories like I am wearing today for a look that is attention grabbing but not overpowering.

Neon Look

If you are not brave enough to do neon all over (Check out Aria from Pretty Little Liars) test it out with jewelry or accessories first before taking the plunge.  Try a statement necklace with jeans and a tee for a look that says classic style with a little touch of trendiness.  A skinny belt in a neon shade can really revive an old dress that has been worn a 100 times. Try it over a black dress or even a print for a fun, flirty look.

NEON

Do you think you will try the neon trend? What would be your favorite way to wear brights and neons?

Pretty Little Liars Masquerade Fashion

Pretty Little Liars Masquerade Fashion

Tonight on the season finale of Pretty Little Liars, A had the girls come to the town’s masquerade ball for a stalking beat down.

I don’t want to focus on “A” or who A is or is going to be…I want to focus on the fashion.  As always this show is not lacking in the fashion department and tonights episode is no exception.  All of the girls looked amazing but Spencer’s dress is by far the stand out for me.

Its a nice contrast of yellow/mustard shiffon with a black leather esque neckline.  It is such a unexpected mix of textures, colors and textiles that is it just a joy to look at.  She paired it with a beautiful black lace mask which was a nice pairing with the dress and added a feminine touch.

Not sure on the designer just yet but with prom season coming you can believe that this dress or knock offs of it will be available soon.

What do you think? Who do you think has the best look?

Aria from Pretty Little Liars : Neon Nightmare or High Fashion High School?

Feb 08

So if you aren’t familiar with ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” you are missing out on some major drama and some seriously fashionable teenagers.  We’ve posted about Aria before, check out this amazing leopard cardigan and Elliot Lucca backpack from last season.

Last night, Aria sported one of spring’s most difficult trends to carry off; head to toe neon accessories.  From her necklace to her belt to her wedges, she was rocking neon yellow all through the halls of her high school.

I don’t wear neon or bright tones very often so this look would be a bit out of my comfort zone but I think there are ways to try out the neon trend without going overboard or feeling like you are waiting in line for a Ninja Mutant Ninja Turtles movie circa 1989.

I would try testing out the look with one small accessory at a time.  Her skinny belt for instance would look amazing paired over something a bit more neutral like a basic solid cardigan and jeans.  I could even see something in this tone working really well with leopard print as a nice contrast. Jewelry is another way to try out this look without investing too much into it.  Try out some bangles or a long necklace over your basic jeans and tee for an unexpected punch to an everyday outfit.

I think she always looks great and she is by far my favorite character and fashion reference in the show.  She is always super daring yet confident in what she wears.  I think this outfit is a bit matchy matchy for her character’s normal personal style but hey, we all try new things.

What did you think of Aria’s look last night? Too much or great way to incorporate some of spring’s newest trends?

Happy Birthday Drama Filled Mama!

May 18

So I have been so busy this week that I missed my own blog’s first birthday! I started dramafilledmama.com on May 13th 2010 as a research project for work, to get familiar with blogging itself as well as content generation and search engine optimization.  Now a year later I am hooked! I have my ups and downs but all in all its a great hobby and it is one of my very few “escapes” that I have as a working mother/wife.

In the past year I have done lots of posts about fashion, make up, accessories, challenges, food, kids etc but there were some favorites on the way.

Most Popular Posts:

4.  Smokey Eye and Nude Lip Makeup Tutorial on a Budget…Rimmel Products

3.  Pretty Little Liars….Aria’s Amazing Leopard Cardigan

2.  Zara Leopard Scarf…as seen on Kourtney Kardashian

1.  To Die for…Elliot Lucca Handbags as seen on Pretty Little Liars

I am not shocked by these results…what this tells me is that I have an audience that loves the drama and glamour of trashy teen dramas and the Kardashian family and there is no shame in that…after all I love those things too, if I didn’t I wouldn’t write about them.

My favorite thing I did with the blog this year was my February shoe challenge. I vowed to wear a different pair of shoes each day in February and I really did it.  I wanted to quit but I didn’t and I will admit it was a great challenge, it really put my coordination skills to the test and forced me to blog everyday which I really liked.

My favorite individual post was Having Small Feet Blows, I think it is a truly honest post that at the time allowed me to vent and say what I wanted to say and my arch nemesis Kim Kardashian for running out of small sizes on shoedazzle :) Not really it was a fun post and at the time I was being serious but now looking back its just funny and fun to read.

I can’t wait to see what the second year of this blog brings, I hope to venture out into more challenges, recipes and home decor how to’s and ideas, make up and hair tutorials and requests. What do you want to see this year? Shoot me a quick line at mallory.acrey@gmail.com and request something, anything and I will see what I can do.

I want to thank all of my faithful readers, this is a small blog and it started out REALLY small, basically my mom, sister and aunt faithfully reading my posts each day and commenting but it has blossomed into something that I am really proud to call my own and I am greatful for all of my readers :) Also my little kiddos, they are the reason that I am Drama Filled Mama! ( I couldn’t help but include photos of them in this post) When it comes to readers and followers the more the merrier, tell your friends, co workers, moms etc I would love you hear from you all.

What were some of your favorite posts from the past year? I would love to know.

To Die For – Elliot Lucca Bags – As seen on Pretty Little Liars

Feb 15

On last nights episode of Pretty Little Liars, Aria (my fave fashion character) was rocking a super cute metallic backpack.  After a little research I found out that this backpack is by designer, Elliot Lucca. The bag that she is carrying is the Teba Pleated Flap Tote. it can be worn cross body or as a backpack.

This would be a great bag for a mom as you could use it as a backpack so that your hands are completely free.  It reminds me of Petunia Pickle Bottoms’ Boxy Backpack diaper bags as they have this same functionality.  Anyway the bag is on sale for $150 which is not bad for something like this.  Keep in mind that metallics are a great neutral if you use them correctly.  Try pairing it with solids and classic peices first them venture out with prints.  Make sure you don’t pair it with other metallics.  Let this peice shine on its own.

What do you think of this bag? Is this something that you would wear?

I found a few other items that I am in love with on this site…One in particular, The Gisella Satchel in Peony Pink which retails for $208 not too bad…may have to be my next splurge..what do you think?
