My New Obsession – Dorothy Perkins Dresses

May 08

When do you feel you became a woman? Was it on your first date, your first kiss,

Joan Mad Men

These silhouettes rock for accentuating curves.

or any number of other embarrassing moments in your teens? For me none of these days compared to the day that I determined what silhouettes flatter my body.

I was never a small girl and I struggled through middle and high school.  I didn’t understand why I couldn’t share clothes with my size 00 (yes they make a double zero) to size 2 friends.  Finally close the end of college I tried on a dress, very tailored, lots of strategic seam lines and a beautiful scoop neckline.  The moment this dress touched my body it was like the angels began to sing, it was like it was made for me.  I finally realized what my body was supposed to look like clothed. Once I got noticed in this look, I soon realized that with a dress that truly fits and makes you look like a woman and not a little girl, you can get almost anyone to pay attention to you.

Well now, even after two kids and 35 lbs down, my body still looks the best in a very tailored silhouette with a slight vintage aesthetic.  There is something about the late 50s/60s dresses that makes your body look the best it can.  Well I have found the holy grail of vintage looking ladylike dresses that are sexy, modern, fun and affordable, Dorothy Perkins.

100s of pieces in amazing prints, lace, chiffon with stunning details like cutout necklines, peplums and flouncy skirts, I am obsessed with almost every dress in Dot’s repertoire. With a price tag ranging from about $50 to $100 a girl could afford a few of these items in her closet. With body hugging cuts in fabrics and necklines that remain lady like, a dress like this is all a girl needs to make people see if her way.

These dresses could easily be worn to all sorts of events like cocktail parties, work events, meetings, date night, weddings etc.  It all depends on the styling.  Here are just a few pieces that I am in love with and cannot wait to purchase! I’m pretty sure that I am going to look like Christina Hendricks as Joan from Mad Men in the navy blue number below (in my brain that is)

Subway Art

Jan 25

With all of the cute subway art I have been seeing on Pintrest I decided that this would be a perfect way to create some super cute custom colored art work for Luna’s room that would match her bedding perfectly b/c I have been having a hard time finding what I want.  I figured that I was creative & patient enough to make my own subway art….and I was!!

This collection of Luna’s birthday stats is super cute, matches her bedding exactly (I literally extracted the colors directly from the bedding) and it lets me remember the who, what, when, where of one of my favorite days in history.  I loved this so much that I decided to bite the bullet and post it within an etsy store, Drama Filled Printables,  to make it available for you guys.  There are so many printables on etsy and some are down right expensive so I decided to sell them for about 1/2 of what most others go for.  I have posted an 8 x 10 version of your kiddos birth stats to be used as wall art, birth announcement etc in a printable format.  Once you have it you can do what you want with it, resize it, frame it, send it as a postcard etc…the sky is the limit.

I am also working on name meaning peices as well to go as a companion to the birthday stats print.  You can order your custom print on my etsy store and choose from the colors listed or email me a color combo or bedding set you are trying to match and I can create a custom match color combo just for your room.

What do you guys think? Are you in love with the subway art trend? What other things would you like to see in Subway art style?

My Christmas Wish List

Dec 06

Christmas is by far one of my favorite times of the year and while I do love to shop for myself I love giving gifts as well. This year during my shopping efforts I have done great about not buying items for myself so instead of buying them I decided to blog them, much cheaper and not so greedy :) Here are a few things I would love to see under my tree this year!

Christmas Wish List

New Camera – I toyed around with the idea of getting a fancier SLR camera to take great photos of my kids but I can’t sacrifice the convenience of a slim, point and shoot camera.  If I can’t carry the camera in my purse photos will never be taken, just being honest so this little Nikon purple camera seems like the way to go, its adorable, my favorite color and it comes with its own rechargable battery which is vital!

Britney or GaGa Tour DVD – I have seen both these ladies on tour recently and both shows were amazing…why not relive that at home on DVD?

Sewing Supplies – I just recently started sewing so I need all sorts of little odds and ends to make my job a little easier, a great pair of scissors, extra needles for my machine, fabric, thread etc.

Nail Polish and Nail Polish Accessories – I am in love with the stick on nail decals and fun nail polish colors.  I own way to many colors but I cannot get enough. I love OPI, Essie and I am grooving on the new Kardashian Kollection at Wal Mart.  Currently I am lusitng over Khole had a Lam-Lam and Sealed with a Kris and Rainbow in the S-Kylie, as well as Essie’s “Cocktail Bling” “Sole Mate” “Mink Muffs” “Glamour Purse” don’t forget Sally Hansen’s leopard and frock star nail polish strips

Marc Jacobs Daisy – This is my self proclaimed signature scent.  It is so versatile and I think that it easily transitions through the seasons.  I am currently out of the large bottle so obviously I need a refill but I would also love a roller ball version to travel with or keep at work or in my purse

Delicate Rose Gold Ring – I have been in love with rose gold since purchasing my Michael Kors Rose Gold rose gold watch last year.  It compliments my skin and hair color and I get so many comments on it so I want a rose gold ring and I am loving the look of this little bow ring or delicate hammered band.

Arrow Necklace – I am in love with this little teeny arrow necklace in gold/rose gold.  Wouldn’t it be adorable as an everyday peice that you pair with everything? So sweet and charming and so versatile.

Babushka Doll Water Carafe - I am in love with this sweet little water carafe for my bedside table.  It would be such a cute addition to my bedroom with a purpose.

Assorted Dresses/Clothes – I am in love with some of New York and Company’s new winter line.  So many great dresses and tops and their tailoring works so well with my silhouette that its almost a crime to NOT buy them.  Also they have crazy good coupons, like right now in stores all items are buy one get one free, yep FREE! CRAZY! I am in love with this little holiday dress and these super cute tops in atomic red.

Michael Kors Watch – Ok so kind of an extravagant gift but a girl can dream.  There are currently two different watches that I am lusting over, the horn with gold detail one and the Runway watch in brown.  Both are beautiful and would look amazing with almost anything!

What are you wishing for this Christmas?

Men’s Closet Essential…The Button Down Shirt

Nov 21

Most of the time I discuss what items every woman should own but there are definitely closet essentials for a man as well.

The one on the top of my list is the button down shirt.  Every man’s wardrobe should contain at least 5 button down shirts for different weather, states of dress, layering and more.  Another thing to keep in mind that the shape of a button down shirt is classic, meaning that its shape will never be off trend.  With that being said, colors and patterns are where you have to be concerned with staying within the trend for the season in question.

No worries though there are tons of looks that a button down shirt can be worked into that will carry any guy through the seasons and years in style.

My favorite look right now is a classic flannel button down shirt and jeans.  There is something about this look that makes me think of a sexy lumberjack, tough and rugged, swinging an ax while still looking sexy.  Aeropostale has a great selection of button down shirts that are super affordable and very versatile.

What is your favorite look on a guy?

Finding the Perfect Jacket

Oct 25

In Louisiana the weather never really makes up its mind, so one day it can be 90 degrees and the next 40.  Because of this change people rarely ever store away one season of clothes to make room for another, we simply recycle summer pieces and turn them into Fall pieces and visa versa.

There are a lot of challenges with doing this sort of pairing but a vital transitional peice to have in your closet is a lightweight jacket.  The kacket can be layered on top of a summer dress with boots for fall or a silk cami and jeans.

I have been on the lookout for a basic, dark demin jacket for a few months now and I am having the hardest time finding one that fits the bill and doesn’t break the bank.

Here are a few of my favorite options for a Fall jacket

The perfect Jacket

Leather motorcycle jacket, $115
Bisou Bisou denim jacket, $35
Lauren Conrad faux leather jacket, $53
Levi Strauss co, $198

1.  Levis Made in the USA Selvage Trucker Jacket – By far this is the perfect match for the jacket I have in my head, its a classic dark denim, nice slim fit and it would go great with almost anything.  But with a $198 price tag its a bit more than I wanted to spend.

2.  Bisou Bisou Dark Denim Jacket - This jacket is randomly from JCPenny, who knew! its got a great price of $35 and a really nice color and basic classic detailing.  The only issue with this jacket is sizing.  I am normally a standard size large but my shoulders are a bit wide so I worry that the size large may be a bit tight in the shoulder and they don’t offer an XL

Since I didn’t find a huge promising group of denim jackets that would work I started looking for alternate options to fill my transitioning need, slim fitting leather/motorcycle styles.

3.  LC Lauren Conrad Crinkled Faux-Leather Crop Jacket - I am in love with almost everything about this jacket.  Its a great color, greige is what I would call it, its super neutral and would go with almost anything.  Its a nice slim fit and looks thin enough to layer without looking bulky. At only $53 I think its a steal and is already in my shopping cart….look out Kristen Cavalari, LC is coming your way.

4.  Buffalo Jacket, Stand Collar Leather Motorcycle - This jacket is beautiful and since it is real leather the price tag is pretty hefty.  It would look great paired with jeans or even a super feminine dress.  The color is great and would work with most palates but with that price, $240,  is a bit out of my range. :(

How do you like to transition your summer pieces into Fall? Have you seen any good denim or leather-like jackets out there? Leave your answers in the comments below or tweet them to me @mlj2374
