Wedge Sneakers…A Trend to Try?

Oct 18

Ok so I am not one of those girls that easily pulls of athletic clothes.  Even when I work out I don’t wear traditional exercise clothes. They just don’t flatter my shape and they make me feel like I am wearing pajamas.  Sneakers are another thing that I don’t fell comfortable in, they literally give me blisters every time I wear them.  One of my hugest pet peeves are girls/women who wear sneakers with jeans….seriously when does this look good?

You may have recently been seeing a new style of sneaker that allows fab sporty girls stay comfy while getting a little lift with a hidden wedge.  I am a little on the fence about these wedge sneakers but on some people they just work.

My fave thing about these bad boys is that they are an unexpected choice and they weirdly work with jeans, leggings and even dresses. They also give off that “I look fab and didn’t even try” vibe which I think every girl wants.

How to Rock Colored Denim

Apr 26

I’m sure you’ve seen a wide range of colored denim in stores lately! Not only are these bright bottoms fun to wear they can really change up your normal jeans and a tee outfit.

Scared to wear colors on bottom? There are a few rules to follow:

Don’t try to match! – If you are trying to wear kelly green skinnies, don’t pair it with a printed top with kelly green in it.  You will end up looking like a toddler with a matchy match outfit.

  • Try them with White/Black - If you are not sure white or blak never fail to work with your colored denim.
  • Neutral Colors – Try nude, ivory, blush pink, gray etc these tones are suprisingly complimentary to most brighter tones.
  • Contrasting Colors – Pair your bright bottoms with a contrasting color, like green with red or orange, orange pants with blue or navy, pink with kelly green.

Neutral Accessories are safe – Don’t try and match your accessories with a color in your outfit. You will end up looking like you bought all of your jewelry together on a coordinated card with a necklace, earrings, ring etc and you don’t what that. Try gold, beige and gray for a look that is effortless.

Monochromatic works – This is a combination of the two rules above.  Wearing all of one color really works with colored denim if you do it right.  Make sure to balance your look with elements that are different ranges of the same color, not all things need to be hot pink.  Try hot pink pants with a dusty pink feminine top, or orange skinnies with a top that is a peachy neutral tone.

Let one peice shine – In this case, your jeans will probably be your shining star so make sure that you don’t over accessorize and end up looking like rainbow bright :)

Check out these great color combos for inspiration.

How to Rock Neon

Apr 16

Ok so I’m sure that you have been seeing neon or bright colors in all of your favorite stores.  From dresses, to top to wedges, belts and beyond, neon is everywhere but how do you rock this look without looking like AC Slater getting ready for a date at the Max? Don’t be afraid of this “Look at me” trend, the easiest way to pull this look off without trying….dark denim.

Try pairing a neon top with dark denim and neutral accessories like I am wearing today for a look that is attention grabbing but not overpowering.

Neon Look

If you are not brave enough to do neon all over (Check out Aria from Pretty Little Liars) test it out with jewelry or accessories first before taking the plunge.  Try a statement necklace with jeans and a tee for a look that says classic style with a little touch of trendiness.  A skinny belt in a neon shade can really revive an old dress that has been worn a 100 times. Try it over a black dress or even a print for a fun, flirty look.

NEON

Do you think you will try the neon trend? What would be your favorite way to wear brights and neons?

Trend Alert – Peplums

Trend Alert – Peplums

One of the hottest emerging trends, the peplum dress, was in attendance at the 2012 Oscars last night.  A peplum is a short
overskirt or ruffle attached at the waistline of a jacket, blouse, or dress. It originates from the word Peplos, a greek term, which describes the portion of a garment worn by women before 500 BC that came up and over their waist band of their skirt handing down halfway to the floor.

Peplums were all over the Spring 2012 runway in a slew of different shapes, sizes and colors from all sorts of designers.  Even though the stick figure models in the runway photos don’t show this, peplums are a super flattering silhouette accentuating the waist and hiding other not so great areas.

With the Oscars last night, people are always buzzing about the fashion and becuase there were a few peplum dresses on the red carpet last night, I think more people will be trying out this trend.  Both Tina Fey and Michelle Williams, nominated for Best Actress, sported peplum looks.

Tina Fey was in a beautiful navy, Caroline Herrara gown with a peplum top.  The gown flattered Fey’s shape and her saphire accessories were right on point with her gown.  I love the way the dress is styled and accessorized…it gives her an old Hollywood glamour look which you would expect with her.  This is by far the best I have seen Tina Fey look on the red carpet…Ever!

Michelle Williams was all about trends last night.  She was wearing a reddish/orange Louis Vitton peplum dress with a strapless silhouette.  The shape was absolutely adorable on her and the color was amazing, very close to 2012′s color of the year, Tangerine Tango.  She was styled very simply with a basic necklace and pink clutch.

So what do you think of this trend? Do you think it is something that you would try? Check it out b/c peplums were seen all over the 2012 Fall runways at Fashion Week so I think they are here to stay, for a while anyway.

How to Rock a Statement Necklace

Feb 24

How to Rock a Statement Necklace

I am obsessed with statement necklaces.  What is a statement necklace do you ask? Well its an IN YOUR FACE accessory that should be the absolute focal point of your outfit.  Most of the time you see lots of crystals, stones, large proportions and my fave, contrasting colors that really bring these pieces to life.

My look today...Tomato red with sea green.

There are a few rules or tips that can make working these necklaces into your everyday look without looking like you are playing dress up.

1.  Don’t Over Accessorize – If you are going to be wearing a huge stoned necklace don’t over accessorize in other areas.  Large neckalces need their own space, especially if they are busy to start off with.  You don’t want your necklace to have to compete with large or overly intricate earrings.  My rule of thumb is to only have one accessory in each area of your body.  For example if you are wearing a large short necklace, you don’t need earrings, if you have a large hair accessory, earrings or a necklace are not needed.  If you are wearing bracelets on each wrist, cocktail rings are too much etc.

2.  Don’t try to Match – Once of my favorite things about statement necklaces are that they are a “look at me” item.  You don’t want them to blend into your outfit! Try contrasting colors to really make a statement, blue with orange, green with tomato red, pink with army green etc.  The sky is the limit! Such a great way to experiment on a small scale with color contrasting.

3.  Start Simple- If this trend is new for you don’t start out mixing a lime green 3 lb necklace with a leopard dress and striped tights! Try out your neck jewels with a simple white tee, jeans and wedges, you are sure to get noticed without stopping traffic.

4.  Don’t be Afraid – This is a trend that some people are really afraid to try out because they are afraid to branch out.  If people see you questioning your fashion choice they will be focused on it too and not in a good way.  Be confident and everyone will notice how amazing you look.  Don’t be surprised if you see Judy from Accounting rocking a statement necklace next week as an homage to your style.  Confidence is key, as long as you look comfortable in your accessory everyone will notice you in a good way.

Here are some ideas for working statement necklaces into your style with a few suggestions of colors to pair them with.
