Pretty Little Liars Masquerade Fashion

Tonight on the season finale of Pretty Little Liars, A had the girls come to the town’s masquerade ball for a stalking beat down.

I don’t want to focus on “A” or who A is or is going to be…I want to focus on the fashion.  As always this show is not lacking in the fashion department and tonights episode is no exception.  All of the girls looked amazing but Spencer’s dress is by far the stand out for me.

Its a nice contrast of yellow/mustard shiffon with a black leather esque neckline.  It is such a unexpected mix of textures, colors and textiles that is it just a joy to look at.  She paired it with a beautiful black lace mask which was a nice pairing with the dress and added a feminine touch.

Not sure on the designer just yet but with prom season coming you can believe that this dress or knock offs of it will be available soon.

What do you think? Who do you think has the best look?

Aria from Pretty Little Liars : Neon Nightmare or High Fashion High School?

Feb 08

So if you aren’t familiar with ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” you are missing out on some major drama and some seriously fashionable teenagers.  We’ve posted about Aria before, check out this amazing leopard cardigan and Elliot Lucca backpack from last season.

Last night, Aria sported one of spring’s most difficult trends to carry off; head to toe neon accessories.  From her necklace to her belt to her wedges, she was rocking neon yellow all through the halls of her high school.

I don’t wear neon or bright tones very often so this look would be a bit out of my comfort zone but I think there are ways to try out the neon trend without going overboard or feeling like you are waiting in line for a Ninja Mutant Ninja Turtles movie circa 1989.

I would try testing out the look with one small accessory at a time.  Her skinny belt for instance would look amazing paired over something a bit more neutral like a basic solid cardigan and jeans.  I could even see something in this tone working really well with leopard print as a nice contrast. Jewelry is another way to try out this look without investing too much into it.  Try out some bangles or a long necklace over your basic jeans and tee for an unexpected punch to an everyday outfit.

I think she always looks great and she is by far my favorite character and fashion reference in the show.  She is always super daring yet confident in what she wears.  I think this outfit is a bit matchy matchy for her character’s normal personal style but hey, we all try new things.

What did you think of Aria’s look last night? Too much or great way to incorporate some of spring’s newest trends?

Duggar Family Photo Controversy

Jan 05

If you are not familiar with the Duggar family you probably don’t have TLC so I’ll fill you in.  They are a family that practices as conservative Baptists, this means that they educate their family at home, they don’t allow their girls (& boys) to date, wear makeup or pants etc.  They main claim to fame is the size of their family, they have 19 children and Michelle, the mother (45 years old) just suffered a miscarriage.

This is where the online controversy comes in.  Since the family has a reality TV show they are in the public eye and shared their loss with the world.  They did so through a ceremony a series of photos of the child’s hands and feet.  I think there are two sides to this story and why people feel as they do.

1.  Miscarriage and stillbirth are normally very private thing. Many people act like the family has not suffered a loss b/c it wasn’t a “real” baby at this point.  While everyone is entitled to their own opinions or beliefs, I have suffered a miscarriage and no matter how far along your pregnancy is there is a loss there. I think becuase of the normally private nature of such occurences many people feel uncomfortable with the photos.

2.  The photos show a “real” baby. Once again no matter what your beliefs the termination of a pregnancy this country allows abortions to happen through the 2nd trimester of a pregnancy or up to 24 weeks.  Each state has their own regulations for when, how long, where etc these procedures can take place but ultimately abortion is legal until 24 weeks.  The Duggar baby miscarried at 19 weeks gestation.  I think this photo makes many people uncomfortable becuase you can see that its a “real” baby with hands, fingers, feet, toes etc and its gestational age is 5 weeks younger than when an abortion can legally occur.

3.  Exploitation of the Duggar children.  I think many people are outraged by the photos b/c it seems as just another way for this family to gain success and or fame off of their children and lifestyle and beliefs.  While this may be true the family is considered public figures which means they are not guaranteed the same privacies we all are.  REleasing these photos may have been their way of getting them out of their own terms before a tabloid could do it.

4. Why choose to capture that horrific moment in a photo? Many people don’t understand why a family would want a photo of a lost child during pregnancy or shortly after due to the horrible memories it would bring up.  Once again everyone feels and grieves differently but families that have miscarried or lost a child often have little to no mementos of their life or time with them.  I think having photos made of your child at any stage is your right as a parent.  Just as we have rights to do what we wish with our bodies, as mothers we have a right to do what we wish with our children as long as no one is harmed.

All in all I can sympathize with the Duggar family because I too know how this loss can feel especially when so many discredit your loss.  Regardless of beliefs I feel that the family has the right to photograph their baby and distribute them as they wish. I do understand why some people are uncomfortable with the photos because it is something they don’t understand or because it seems as though it is another way for their TLC show to gain ratings.

Miscarriage and still birth is a horrible tragedy that happens to so many and ultimately cannot be stopped.  Odds are you know at least one woman who has suffered this type of loss and you don’t know it.

What do you think? Are the photos inappropriate? How do you feel?

Mad Men Collection by Banana Republic

Aug 10

I am a huge Mad Men fan and one of my favorite things about the show is the fashion.  Joan Hollaway, played by Christina Hendricks is my fashion and body icon. She is so beautifully curvacious and womanly and the men on the 60s love that about her, too bad people don’t think that way now.

Banana Republic, my favorite store for structure tailored peices, laucned a Mad Men inspired collection today and it is beautiful.  From tie front blouses to cigarette pants and tailored dresses the collection will fit right into a modern women’s wardrobe in a snap.  The colors are very fall with many muted neutrals, soft warm tones like navy, wine and gray.  I can’t wait to pick up a few peices for my fall collection.

I have my eyes on The Betty Dress, and animal print cardigan paired with this tie front blouse.  I can see these pieces being great for work, paired with pencils, slim fitting pants and even jeans.  The dress I would love to wear this to a variety of holiday parties.  The price point starts at around $49.50 and goes up to about $175, not outrageous for great pieces that will wear well.

What do you think of this collection? Do you think you will purchase any items?

My Favorite Things

Jun 30

These are a few of my favorite things……

Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin – I started this book about a week ago and read a crazy amount of it on my flight to California last week and I am completely enthralled.  There is nothing better than a book that sucks you in, a book that you don’t want to go to sleep because you feel you may miss something.  I’m not quite finished with it yet but I am excited to see where this book and the sequels go.  I love rooting for the underdog.

Glittered Nail Polish - I don’t normally wear glittered nail polish but I love the look of painting one nail (normally the ring finger nail) with a sheer subtle glitter polish.  It adds something special to your manicure.  I recently used Essie’s Ballet Slippers, a subtle whitish pink with an iridescent glitter, it was sweet and chic all at the same time.

Fresh Strawberries – Summer is always so amazing becuase of the amazing fruit the is available.  Strawberries are definitely my favorite.  I buy 2 to 3 lbs at one time and we eat them with every meal.  My children would rather have strawberries than candy and I can’t blame them.  Pair them with a sandwich instead of chips, have them as dessert or blend them with a margarita..anyway they are served I am dying over them right now.

Orange Candle from AnthropologieOrange is one of my favorite scents, its super clean without being perfumy.  This candle is in a beautiful tin and is so fragrant.  I have my candle on my desk at work and it just seems to make my day so much better

The Big C on Showtime – I came across the first season of this show on Showtime on Demand and I am kinda loving it.  Laura Linney plays a middle aged mom and wife that is hiding the fact that she is dying of stage 4 melanoma.  The show is extremely honest, funny and heartbreaking all at the same time.  Check it out on Showtime on Mondays at 9:30.

What do you think of my favorite things? What are your faves right now? Share them with me on facebook or tweet them to me @mlj2374. I’d love to hear from you!
